Leah Shenyer

Associate in Arts

Leah Shenyer was born and raised in the lower Yakima Valley. While in school she participated in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), Future Farmers of America (FFA), and band. She played the clarinet as well as bass clarinet and taught herself to play trumpet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and baritone saxophone. While in band, Shenyer had the opportunity to travel to California and perform at Universal Studios, visit the Disney recording studio, and record several pieces of music. A dedicated student, she pushed herself by taking advanced placement courses in history, and English. In 2015 she graduated from Prosser High School and later that fall enrolled at Yakima Valley College’s Grandview Campus.

“Attending YVC has given me the opportunity to experience college but still be close to home. I wasn’t really ready to leave for a large university once I graduated from high school, so attending YVC’s Grandview Campus was the best option for me. I still get the college experience but not on an intimidating level and I am only ten minutes away from home,” stated Shenyer. “Anytime anyone asks how I like it here, I always say I don’t like it here, I love it. The teachers are always willing to help, there is the math and writing centers to go to for help or advice, classes are challenging but not overwhelming and I get the same education I would at a university but here it is not only cheaper but also closer to home and I feel connected to everyone on campus,” she continued.

Shenyer has also become involved in campus life by serving as the Grandview Student Council (GSC) vice president. “Being on GSC has given me the opportunity to see the school in a new way. I feel more connected to the school and everyone there. I have also grown as a person,” she concluded. Following YVC she plans to transfer to Central Washington University and pursue a degree in history.
