YVC Course Modalities

A course modality identifies how the class will be taught. The class may be held face-to-face, online or in a combination of both. Yakima Valley College offers various ways for students to successfully complete their courses.

Face-to-Face

  • Course instruction is provided at a specific location on a specific day and time in person.
  • All students are expected to meet in real time at scheduled class times, in-person, in an on-campus location.
  • When browsing courses in ctcLink, the “Instruction Mode” for the course will be listed as “In Person” with a day, time, and building and room number assigned. How it looks:

Asynchronous Online

  • Course instruction is provided online without specific days and times assigned to the class.
  • All students are expected to complete coursework online according to the deadlines set by the course instructor.
  • When browsing courses in ctcLink, the “Instruction Mode” for the course will be listed as “Online.” How it looks on class schedule:

Synchronous Online

  • Course instruction is provided online on specific days and times assigned to the class.
  • All students are expected to meet online in real time at scheduled class times.
  • When browsing courses in ctcLink, the “Instruction Mode” for the course will be listed as “Online.” How it looks on class schedule:

Hybrid

  • Course instruction is provided at a specific location on a specific day and time (as with Face-to-Face classes), and part of the course is also completed online either synchronously or asynchronously, depending on the course content.
  • All students are expected to follow specific course policies and guidelines individually set by the course instructor.
  • When browsing courses in ctcLink, the “Instruction Mode” for the course will be listed as “Hybrid.” A day, time, and building and room number will be assigned for the in-person class sessions. For the online sessions “TBA” will be listed for the day and time and “Hybrid Online” for the room assigned.
  • Further instruction about online components will be provided by the course instructor in the first week of the instruction.
