Community invited to STEM Day on January 7, 2023

Yakima Valley College, in partnership with the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), will host a STEM Day for the public on Saturday, January 7, 2023, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. in YVC’s Hopf Union Building, Building 9. Do you have a child who likes to experiment and explore the connections between math, technology, science and engineering? This free event will provide a host of hands-on activities, presentations and workshops for children ages 4-11.

STEM Director Cristy Rasmussen said Yakima Valley College is excited to bring OMSI, which operates one of the nation’s premier science outreach programs for K-12 students, to the Yakima Valley. OMSI educators will prepare 10 to 12 tables with science equipment and challenges guaranteed to thrill youngsters, perplex adults and offer an unforgettable science experience. OMSI outreach activities range from a portal planetarium to exploration of the human body.

“By partnering with OMSI, Yakima Valley College has the opportunity to share STEM-related principles and programs with more children in the Yakima Valley,” said Rasmussen. “By engaging with STEM education in early childhood, children can begin to learn and retain a knowledge base that they can build on as they get older.”

YVC’s STEM Pathway offers degrees and certificates for students who want to be doctors or dentists, pharmacists or physical therapists; students who want to design and build complex structures such as computer systems, machines and buildings; or who plan on managing farms, starting wineries or pursuing research in any field of science or mathematics. Students interested in teaching high school sciences should also consider this pathway. While some degrees and certificates end at YVC, many of them transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

Groups of 10 or more planning to attend STEM Day should contact STEM Navigator Vanessa Tucker for reservation times at vtucker@yvcc.edu or 509.574.4892.
