Yakima Valley College Music Presents Latin Jazz Night

Yakima, WA – Join YVC’s Music program for their Latin Jazz Night on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 7:00pm in Kendall Hall, Building 12, Auditorium. This event features the music of Brazil. YVC Jazz students will be performing in small group settings along with world-class guest artists Daniela Spielmann, Marco de Carvalho, Adriana Giordano, Alexandre Ribeiro, and Jeff Busch. Bossa nova, samba, and choro are just some of the Brazilian musical styles that will be explored. $5-$10 suggested donation.

Guest Artists:
Marco de Carvalho (Guitar) – Marco is a Brazilian musician, originally from Rio de Janeiro. He graduated from the prestigious Music Conservatory of Rio de Janeiro. Marco has been a performance guitarist, composer and arranger for thirty years. He plays an extensive repertoire of music from Rio de Janeiro as well as his own compositions. Marco has played with many musicians in Brazil and the USA. He has recorded on numerous CDs and sound tracks also producing and arranging.

Daniela Spielmann (Saxophone & Flute) – Daniela Spielmann has been part of the Brazilian choro scene since 1998 as a saxophonist, flutist, composer and arranger. Daniela has participated in numerous festivals internationally and for 15 years was a member of the band on TV Globo’s  Altas Horas, giving her the opportunity to perform with many leading artists. She is also an enthusiastic teacher and researcher and currently has a position in Rio de Janiero working with children and young adults. She received her Master’s in 2008 and is now finishing her Ph.D. thesis about gafieira music and its relationship with groove music and dance.

Adriana Giordano (Vocalist) – Vocalist Adriana Giordano is an effervescent presence on the bandstand. Leading with a deep passion for the Brazilian music of her homeland, she sings with a mesmerizing lyricism that is infectious, enthusiastic and authentically heartfelt. Her melodic finesse and rhythmic acuity weave seamlessly, allowing her to soar effortlessly over the groove and to open up each song in a new and exciting way. Adriana performs and collaborates with a variety of groups and musicians in the Seattle area, including septet En Canto.

Alexandre Ribeiro (Clarinet) – Alexandre Ribeiro has performed and taught internationally at numerous workshops and festivals, and is a member of “Panorama do Choro Paulistano Contemporâneo,” Grupo Luceros & Toninho Ferragutti, Grupo Roda de Choro and Grupo Ó do Borogodó. Alexandre also works extensively in Theatre, collaborating with directors and actors. He is musical director, arranger, composer and instrumentalist of the dance show Fino Fio. In 2009, he established a strong and successful partnership with guitarist Alessandro Penezzi, which resulted in two very prominent records in the instrumental music scene: “Cordas ao Vento” and “Ao Vivo na Bimhuis-Amsterdam.”

Jeff Busch (Percussion) – Jeff Busch is an exuberant drummer/percussionist, vocalist, and composer whose passion for soulful music of varied traditions has led him to perform with jazz, blues, and gospel groups–as well as calypso, samba, and Cuban jazz ensembles. From 1988-96, Jeff studied fine art and music in Leeds, England. Now based in Seattle, Jeff works with the Cornish College of the Arts and for Janelle Keane’s Afro-Brazilian dance classes at the University of Washington Experimental College. He performs with a variety of groups in the Seattle area, including the Jovino Santos Neto quinteto; Cuban jazz groups Rumba Abierta and Tumbao, and Cuban dance band Mango Son.
