Yakima Valley College Offers a Course in Basic Mountaineering – Spring 2018

Yakima, Wash.-For outdoor enthusiasts, Yakima Valley College will offer a Basic Mountaineering Course this spring quarter in partnership with Central Washington Mountain Rescue. This class is offered as a self-support, community service, and non-credit course.

5655 REC 076 Basic Mountaineering; M 7:00-9:30pm

  • The class will be held April 16 to June 23, 2018. There are six evening classes at YVC (April 16 to May 21, 2018). The rest of the course will be taught on-site, outdoors, by members of Central Washington Mountain Rescue. This course covers basic equipment, risk and hazard evaluation, physiological needs of climbers, basic rock climbing through easy fifth class, how to set up a top rope system, safe methods of snow and glacier travel, and crevasse rescue techniques.
  • Prerequisite: Minimum age of 18. Required: General physical fitness, personal gear such as pack and appropriate clothing, transportation to field sessions, reading from text, participation in class and field sessions, and a possible overnight. Students wishing to participate in the final glacier travel field session on June 23 will be expected to demonstrate physical fitness to an instructor any time prior to that date, at preliminary field sessions or optional conditioning hikes that will be offered.

Fee Schedule: $15 payable to YVC at registration and up to $175.00 to Central Washington Mountain Rescue, payable by the first night of class, or $200.00 after that.  You have the option of paying the class fee online at: cwmr.org  See instructions on website for payment process.
