YVC Congratulates Poetry Out Loud Regional Finalists from Ellensburg High School and Wenatchee High School

Yakima, WA – Yakima Valley College English Department congratulates Ellensburg High School Student Ashley Higdon and Wenatchee High School Student Grace Orallo on their win at the Central Regional Poetry Out Loud Competition held at Yakima Valley College on Sunday, February 4, 2018. Both Higdon and Orallo will represent the Central Region during the State Finals of Poetry Out Loud on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the Theatre on the Square in Tacoma, WA.

This is the fourth year YVC has hosted the Central Regional Final Competition for Poetry Out Loud. Students from as far away as Wenatchee and from small schools like Bickleton compete first at their school then in the Regional Final. Regional Finalists complete in two rounds of competition reciting a poem they have chosen from the poems Poetry Out Loud has in their catalog. They must choose at least one poem that comes from the 19th Century or older.

For round one, Orallo recited “April Love” by the romantic era poet Ernest Dowson while Higdon recited Tony Hoagland’s “Please Don’t.” For the second round Higdon chose “Broken Promises” by David Kirby .The audience broke into loud applause with Orallo’s rendition of “The Larger.”
