YVC Students Earn Honors at SkillsUSA Washington State Competition

Yakima, WA- Students from YVC’s Automotive Service Technology program recently received honors at the state-wide SkillsUSA Washington Competition held at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, WA. YVC AST students who earned Gold Medals will have the opportunity to compete in the National SkillsUSA competition this Louisville, Kentucky in June.

These winning students can be made available for interviews and demonstrations inside YVC’s impressive Automotive Service Technology space.

In total YVC brought home three medals at the 2019 Washington State SkillsUSA Competition. Individual honors include: Erma “Jessica” Villarino (Gold Medal, Category: Job Demo Open), Gilbert Young (Gold Medal, Category: Customer Service), and Sabino Rivera (Silver Medal, Category: Customer Service).

YVC students competed against teams from Spokane Community College, Columbia Basin College, Walla Walla Community College, Renton Technical College, and Green River College. Competition categories included: job demonstration, job interview, extemporaneous speech, prepared speech, customer service, uniform, and resume.

SkillsUSA is an applied method of instruction for preparing America’s high performance workers in public career and technical programs. It provides quality educational experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development. It emphasizes total quality at work: high ethical standards, superior work skills, life-long education and pride in the dignity of work. SkillsUSA programs include local, state and national competitions in which students demonstrate occupational and leadership skills. SkillsUSA is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and is cited as a “successful model of an employer-driven youth development training program” by the U.S. Department of Labor.
