Need a Tutor?
All Yakima Valley Community College students qualify for free tutoring services when we have tutors available. The Tutoring Center, located in Prior Hall 171, offers and/or coordinates offering a variety of academic support services targeted towards historically difficult courses, individuals in the Disability Support Services (SSS) http://www.yvcc.edu/dss program, and individuals attending school under other particular grant-funded programs. Drop-in tutoring is arranged for Accounting, American Sign Language, Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Spanish, and other courses as indicated by need on a quarter-by-quarter basis. We can also provide support for arranged study groups. DSS and SSS program participants may qualify for individualized tutoring and should complete a Request for Tutor form. We recently added a science room that includes hands on models, microscopes, charts, and white boards for student use. This is a great area to bring your study group for Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Chemistry learning sessions.
Feel your grades are in jeopardy? Try one of our many "Jeopardy" games. Math and Science knowledge is tested as you challenge your classmates through this game based interface. Instructors can utilize Jeopardy in the classroom too. If we don't have a ready game to match a curriculum, we can work with you to create one. Call today to reserve a date for your classroom or group to experience this fast passed and fun educational tool.
Want to be a Tutor?
The joy of becoming a tutor is not in the pay alone. Not only can we work around your class schedule, but you can choose how many hours you are willing to tutor. Assisting other students strengthens knowledge of subject matter. Working on campus highlights the college experience while building relationships. Tutoring provides the hands-on opportunity educational degree seeking students need. To be a Tutor, students must successfully complete the course to be tutored with a grade of “B” or above, complete more than 30 credit hours, and come recommended by their instructors. The number of tutors we can hire is of course dependent upon assessed need as well as available funding.
Tutors are required to attend annual training sessions and workshops. Training takes place on-campus, is paid, and benefits both the tutor and the tutee. Peer reviews are performed annually as a tool for continued service improvement. If you are interested in becoming a tutor, stop by and fill out an application.

Our Mission
The goal of YVCC’s tutoring program is to foster independent learning. This is done by helping students develop and refine relevant cognitive and applied study skills to gain the knowledge necessary for better academic performance. Tutors focus on helping students exchange and pool information on course content and learn how to benefit from refining learning skills that lead to a broader knowledge base. Tutors create a safe environment in which students may reveal weaknesses, practice cognitive skills and applied learning skills, and learn the benefits of group self-help and reciprocal assistance. Tutors help students use and master the language of the course. Exchanging information in notes, thinking aloud, explaining problem solving skills, discussing successful learning skills, formulating potential test questions, and building complete and accurate answers are characteristics of productive tutoring sessions. Tutors do not re-lecture, ask content-oriented questions, give answers to students, or check homework.
