consultation2.JPGIndividual Consultations

An individual consultation is a 30-minute conversation about your paper. It takes place in the Writing Center between you and a trained Writing Center Consultant.

Consultants offer feedback on any writing project, including papers for all disciplines as well as college scholarship applications and letters. Consultants also assist in the editing process by showing students proof reading strategies, ways to identify patterns of error, and how to use handbooks and other resources.

For faculty, consultants can provide feedback on writing assignments from a student's perspective.

What we do

  • Help you decipher your assignment and start brainstorming ideas.

  • Listen to your ideas and help you start writing.

  • Check the focus of your paper to see if it matches the assignment criteria.

  • Show you ways to organize and develop your ideas.

  • Offer suggestions and encouragement during revisions.

  • Help you identify the strengths and weaknesses of your paper.

  • Help throughout the entire writing process, from brainstorming to drafting and final drafts.

What we don't do

  • Edit your paper for you.

  • Offer a grade for your work.

  • Take ownership of your paper (you are the writer and ultimately in control of your paper's outcome).

Appointments are preferred, but we can accommodate drop-ins if the schedule allows. In Yakima, to make an appointment, come to the Writing Center, in Glenn-Anthon Hall (G-125). Or call us at 574-4829. In Grandview, to make an appointment, come to the Writing Center in L101. Or call us at 882-7073.

TIPS for getting the most out of your visit

  • Come early. The sooner you come to the center after getting your assignment, the more time you will have to develop your ideas.

  • Bring your assignment sheet.

  • Bring a draft, if you have one.

  • Bring specific questions or concerns.

  • Be prepared to get to work on your ideas or your draft.

  • Use our handbooks and handouts, even when you aren't working with a consultant.

  • Visit often. You can visit the center multiple times with one paper. Good writers go through several drafts before producing their final papers.

  • Make an appointment: Drop-ins are welcome, but we may not have a consultant available.

  • Come to G-125 (in Yakima) or L101 (in Grandview) and make an appointment.
