Prior Learning Assessment
What is Prior Learning Assessment?
Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) is a means of determining whether or not the knowledge, skills, and abilities a student has gained through prior learning match the knowledge, skills, and abilities a student would gain by completing a specific course.
What we award for
Yakima Valley Community College currently awards college credit for Advanced Placement, DSST, USAFI, CLEP, and International Baccalaureate examinations. Credits are also awarded through Course Challenge and Technical Preparation classes. Military training and experience may also be assessed based upon evaluation of an official Joint Service Transcript. Qualified faculty approves the appropriate course placement. No more than 45 credits of PLA credit maybe awarded and no more than 25% of the program may be based upon credits granted using an experiential learning methodology, such as portfolio review.
Credit will be awarded after the students completes one quarter at YVCC and only for courses within the institution's regular curricular offerings.
