Program Goal

The Displaced Homemaker program at Yakima Valley Community College is designed to meet specific needs of anyone attempting to make the difficult transition from home and financial dependence to the work place and financial independence.  The training and services offered provide a supportive environment designed to enhance and build self-esteem, confidence, and marketable job skills.

The Displaced Homemaker program at Yakima Valley Community College is designed to meet specific needs of anyone attempting to make the difficult transition from home and financial dependence to the work place and financial independence.  The training and services offered provide a supportive environment designed to enhance and build self-esteem, confidence, and marketable job skills.


Displaced Homemaker Program can help you…

  • Understand your needs.

  • Develop confidence.

  • Identify your work related skills.

  • Explore education and career options.

  • Make decisions and set goals.

  • Develop effective learning and study techniques.

  • Learn computer basics.

 

Program Guidelines


Am I eligible for Displaced Homemaker?

  • Individual has worked primarily in the home for 10 or more years providing unsalaried household services for family members on a full-time basis.

  • Individual is not gainfully employed.

  • Individual needs assistance in securing gainful employment.

  • Have been dependent on the income of another family member but are no longer supported by that income; OR

  • Have been dependent on federal assistance but are no longer eligible to receive that assistance; OR

  • Are supported as the parent of minor children by public assistance or spousal support, but whose youngest children are within two years of reaching 18 years of age

Financial Benefits

Eligible students may receive tuition assistance and funds to cover the cost of books for one quarter at Yakima Valley Community College.  All funding for any qualified Displaced Homemaker student is contingent upon availability of Displaced Homemaker funds.


Course Offerings
 

Books

Often, first quarter Displaced Homemaker students begin their retraining in Yakima Valley Community College’s innovative transition classes.

 

Transition classes are designed to help students achieve academic success in vocational decision-making, math, writing, computers, and college learning. 
Classes listed below are offered quarterly.

  • Introduction to Business Technology (BTech 082)

  • Information Technology (IT 100)

  • Learning Skills (SD 120)

  • Math (Math 071)

  • Technical Writing (PTech 120)


In addition, the Career Connection Center offers a wide range of professional-technical programs within the Workforce Education Division (WED) that are available to Displaced Homemaker students.
