Yakima Valley Community College
Phlebotomy Program

Program Overview
The YVCC phlebotomy program provides quality instruction in the theoretical background and manual skills for accurate blood collection techniques. Because blood analysis is a vital diagnostic tool used routinely in medical practice, phlebotomists must know how to collect, handle, and analyze specimens properly. Through classroom activities and practice in community settings, the student is educated in the increasingly complex methods utilized in the collection of blood samples for laboratory analysis. The YVCC Phlebotomy program promotes professional ethics, teamwork and communications skills as it prepares students for entry-level phlebotomy positions. This program consists of two quarters. The first quarter is lecture and lab, and the second is the Clinical Experience.

Students are placed in local health care facilities to participate in their Clinical Experience with one- on-one guidance from their clinical preceptor. There are two options available for the student. Students choosing the 2-credit option will complete 60 supervised hours in their Clinical Experience. Students choosing the 4-credit option will complete 120 hours and are eligible to complete the national certification examination offered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) in order to earn the title Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT). Only students with 85% or better will be eligible for the 4-credit option.

Careers
Phlebotomists may be hired by a variety of health care facilities, including hospitals, independent reference laboratories, physician office laboratories, clinics, long-term care facilities, government laboratories, insurance companies and health maintenance organizations.

Admission and Requirements
A limited number of student positions are available. A waiting list will be maintained for interested students, and an application will be mailed out in May/June to those wishing Fall Quarter entrance. Application deadline is August 1st of each year. A High School Diploma or GED Certificate must be returned with completed application for acceptance. Acceptance is based on a point system. Upon acceptance the student will be required to provide evidence of current certification of immunizations for measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, Hepatitis B vaccination, and for tuberculin skin tests. Many of the immunizations are available through the Immunization Clinic located on the YVCC campus. A 7-hour HIV/Blood Borne Pathogens Certificate is also required.
