a writing consultant and a student discuss an essay in the Yakima campus Writing Center

Welcome to YVCC Writing Center Online Consultations!

This site is intended for the use of YVCC students only.  Thank you!

YVCC Writing Center Online Consultations are a means for you, the busy YVCC student, to receive feedback on your work outside of writing center hours.  Because the Writing Center is a place where we help writers rather than "fix" writing, please do not expect writing consultants to make corrections to the piece of writing you submit.   Our consultants are trained to focus comments first on content and organizational issues.  Though we can answer specific questions about grammar, spelling, and punctuation, we are not an "editing service" and will not proofread your pieces for you.  In order to best serve you according to our philosophy, we request that you ask us specific questions or direct us to specific areas in your draft.  If you need more help than we provide online, please feel free to drop by the Writing Center on either the Yakima or Grandview campuses.

In order to proceed with your online conference, please click on the "Receive Feedback" button and complete the form.  Be prepared to ask one or two specific questions about the piece of writing that you plan to submit.  You also may ask a consultant a general question about writing even if you don't have a draft to submit.  Here are some examples of the kinds of questions you may choose to ask about your writing:

bulletDo my ideas seem to be in order?  Are they organized?
bulletAm I citing sources correctly?  (Our instructor asked us to use MLA format.)
bulletIs my introduction very interesting?
bulletDoes this part make sense?  (Direct reader to a specific paragraph or paragraphs.)
bulletHave I used semicolons correctly?
bulletI have been told I write a lot of run-ons.  Do you see any run-on sentences?   How can I correct them?
bulletMy instructor told me my essay doesn't have a clear thesis.  What is a thesis?
bulletHow do I get started on a research paper?
bulletWhat seems to be my main point?
