Assistance Programs which Require Proof of Need
There are
three main types of financial aid that may be included in a student's
financial aid award during the year and which require proof of need:
- Grants
not normally repaid.
- Loans usually
deferred while the student is in school, but which must be repaid.
- Student
employment at a campus job for which the student is paid monthly.
Yakima
Valley Community College participates in the following proof-of-need
programs:
- Pell
Grant: a federal grant program. The student must enroll for at least
one credit per quarter.
- Supplemental
Grant: a federal grant program. The student must enroll for at least
one credit per quarter.
- Washington
State Need Grant: a state grant program. The student must be a
Washington State resident and be enrolled in at least six credits per
quarter.
- Academic Competitiveness Grant: The ACG Grant was made available for the 2006-07 school year for first-year college students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2006, and for second-year college students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2005. Awards are $750 per year for the first year and $1300 for the second year.
Eligible Student
- Be a US citizen;
- Be a Federal Pell Grant recipient;
- Be enrolled full-time in a degree program;
- Be enrolled in the first or second year of his/her program of study at a two- or four-year degree granting institution;
- Have completed a rigorous secondary school program of student (after January 1, 2006, if a first-year student, and after January 1, 2005 if a second-year student);
- If a first-year student, not have previously enrolled in an undergraduate program; and
- If a second-year student, have at least a cumulative 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale for the first academic year
- College Tuition
Waiver: a state waiver of tuition. The student must be a Washington
state resident.
- Perkins Loan: a
low interest federal loan program. The student must be enrolled in at
least one credit per quarter.
- Stafford Loan:
a low interest federal loan program. The student must be enrolled in
at least six credits.
- Work study:
federal or state-funded student employment programs. Jobs may be on or
off campus with payment on a monthly basis. The student must be
enrolled in at least one credit.
- YVCC
grant: a state grant program. The student must be a Washington State
resident and enrolled in at least a six credit per quarter.
Other
proof-of need tuition assistance programs may be available to eligible
students. Please call the Career Connection Center at (509) 574-4911 for
current programs and requirements.
Financial aid grant and loan funds can be used to pay college tuition
and fees. Any remaining funds disbursed during the first week of each
academic term.
