YVCC rallies to beat Edmonds
EDMONDS — A night after one of their most impressive wins of the season, Yakima Valley's men found the tables turned. They trailed Edmonds by 10 points at halftime and by 13 early in the second half. But the Yaks recovered, riding the scoring of Anthony Johnson and Spencer Adams and the rebounding of Jody Johnson to an 80-73 victory over Edmonds on Saturday night in the Tritons' gym.
The win, coming after an 89-70 defeat of third-ranked Bellevue, improved No. 5 YVCC to 12-2.
"They really don't like to lose," Yakima Valley coach Ray Funk said. "They overcame, they persevered and they won in spite of their own poor shooting, especially in the first half. We got key stops and we got key rebounds."
The Yaks also got back-to-back 3-pointers in the second half from Adams, who tied the score with one and put YVCC ahead with the other.
Adams backed Anthony Johnson's game-high 22 points with 16 while Jody Johnson led the Yaks' 48-30 rebounding dominance with 13 retrieves.
Mario Allen had 11 points and played solid perimeter defense and Tabid Mohamed added 10 points.
Yakima Valley will open Eastern Region play next Saturday at Wenatchee Valley.
