No. 1 Yaks win fifth straight

Chelsie Morrison scored 19 points and Whitney Honn added 10 as No. 1-ranked Yakima Valley beat Spokane 63-49 in an Eastern Region game Saturday in Sherar Gym.

The victory, YVCC's fifth straight, improved the Yaks to 8-1 in region play and 22-2 overall. The Sasquatch fell to 5-4 and 15-7.

Yakima Valley led only 24-20 at halftime, but Honn, Morrison and Shaunte Nance-Johnson led a 9-0 run to start the second half that gave the Yaks a 33-22 lead with 17:00 to play.

Spokane, which got 15 points from Ali Mittlestedt and 10 from Ren Mallory, rallied to within 43-39 with 10:04 remaining, but Morrison and Nance-Johnson scored four points each in a 10-0 burst that put the game away.

"We played great D," YVCC coach Cody Butler said, "We just couldn't score in the first half. We were getting great looks, but just shot a horrible percentage."
