SPOKANE — Lisa Bishop might not have led the Yakima Valley women's basketball team in scoring, but she certainly came up big when they needed her most.
Bishop scored nine of the Yaks final 11 points, capped by two free throws with 13 seconds left as they held on to defeat Spokane 71-68 in an NWAACC Eastern Region contest Saturday.
Spokane erased a 10-point halftime deficit, eventually tying the game at 65-all on Kellee Neal's basket with 1:27 to play and taking a 68-67 lead on Shantel Haugen's 3-pointer with 47 seconds left.
But YVCC (2-0, 16-1) regained the lead on Tana Stickney's basket with 27 seconds to play, a putback of a Bishop miss. After a Spokane miss, YVCC rebounded and Bishop was fouled, hitting both free throws for the final margin. Spokane missed a 3-pointer at the end.
"It was a tough battle," YVCC coach Cody Butler said. "It's nice to know you can dig a little deeper and pull one out."
Stickney led the Yaks with
21 points, and Bishop had
17 points, six assists and five rebounds.
YVCC was pretty consistent offensively, shooting at least 47 percent in each half and finishing at 47.5 (29 of 61).
Spokane fell behind 32-22 after shooting just 27 percent
(8 of 30) in the first half.
Haugen led all scorers with 26 points.
