Yakima Valley Community College's Taitum Dixon drives between Shoreline's Fran McDonald, left, and Semhar Kelati on Saturday in Sherar Gym.

Shoreline
had no
answer
for
Andrea
Blodgett
in
Saturday's
non-league
women's
basketball
game at
Sherar
Gym.
Nor
did the
Dolphins
have one
for
Chelsie
Morrison.
Or Lisa
Bishop.
Or
Whitney
Honn or
any of
Yakima
Valley's
Yaks.
Answers
require
players,
and
Shoreline
had only
six —
players,
that is.
And
no real
answers,
individually
or
collectively,
for a
deep,
talented
and
versatile
YVCC
squad.
The
resulting
89-24
mismatch,
then,
begged
an
obvious
question
for
Yakima
Valley
coach
Cody
Butler:
Can a
team
benefit
from a
65-point
victory?
"I
think we
did,"
Butler
said.
"We ran
a lot of
stuff
and
executed
really
well. It
didn't
become
open
gym."
Shoreline's
lack of
personnel
and,
accordingly,
its lack
of
competitive
ability
allowed
the Yaks
to work
on a
variety
of
half-court
offensive
sets and
defensive
alignments,
including
zones.
And in
truth
they
needed
that,
since
this
YVCC
team
(7-1)
will
substantially
differ
from the
run-and-gun,
full-court
pressuring
squads
of
recent
years.
"One
of the
best
things,"
Butler
said,
"was
Andi Jo
(Blodgett)
gets to
get
people
in the
right
places
and then
find
them
within
the
structure
of the
offense.
That's
good for
her,
because
in high
school,
when
things
broke
down,
she
could
just go
one-on-one."
And
few
opponents
could
stop the
5-foot-4
point
guard
when she
played
at White
Swan.
The
Dolphins
had
little
success
in that
regard
Saturday,
even
when the
game was
young
and
their
legs
were
fresh.
Blodgett
scored
seven of
Yakima
Valley's
first 14
points
and
finished
with a
game-high
13.
Morrison,
a
much-improved
6-0
sophomore
from
Portland,
had 11
points
as did
6-4
Eisenhower
product
Bryna
Trescott,
the
latter
coming
off the
bench.
Bishop
totaled
10
points
and Honn
added
six to
go with,
by most
estimates,
at least
10
rebounds.
YVCC
was
breaking
in a new
statistics
crew, so
shooting
and
other
stats
were not
complete.
Morrison,
who came
into the
game
shooting
47
percent
from
3-point
range,
said
increased
experience
from
offseason
competition
has
translated
to
increased
confidence.
"I've
worked
on my
shot,
and just
playing
a lot
has
really
helped,"
she
said. "I
think we
have a
really
good
team,
and we
can grow
and do
well in
the
NWAACC.
We have
a lot of
good
players,
and
everyone
just
brings
something
different."
All
14 Yaks
played
at least
four
minutes
Saturday
and all
14
scored.
Shoreline
had
eight
players
until
two were
recently
dismissed,
YVCC
assistant
coach
Kelly
Robbins
said.
Fran
McDonald
was the
Dolphins'
top
scorer
with 10
points,
though
she sat
out part
of the
game
after
hitting
her head
in a
fall.
Yakima
Valley,
having
canceled
a Monday
night
home
game
with
Salish
Kootenai
College,
will
resume
preseason
play in
the
Linn-Benton
Crossover
Tournament
Dec.
14-16 at
Albany,
Ore.
Eastern
Region
play
starts
Jan. 3.
