Earlier Friday night, it was happening to the YVCC women.
The Yaks trailed Blue Mountain by four with 4:17 left in the first half before embarking on a 30-0 run — that's right, 30-0 — en route to a 93-54 rout.
"What I tell our reserves," YVCC coach Cody Butler said, "that we want them to come in and either start a run or sustain a run."
Bryna Trescott and Misty Hansen did just that.
The 6-foot-4 Trescott and the 5-0 Hansen — the long and short of the Yaks' program, you might say — helped Yakima Valley into a tie for the region lead at 4-1 while improving to 18-2 overall.
Hansen, a sophomore from Borah, Idaho, did not come close to stopping Blue Mountain's 5-2 Jequala Warren, who led all scorers with 32 points.
But she did slow her down from time to time, and also managed to score seven points, collect four steals, deal two assists and contribute four offensive rebounds to Yakima Valley's 37-10 advantage in that category.
And if a single shot could be considered pivotal in a 39-point game, Hansen hit it — draining a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give the Yaks a 41-31 lead at halftime.
"It was a shot I had to take for the team," she said. "We just got each other going and played better together on defense. Everyone on this team can contribute."
Said Trescott, who totaled nine points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals in 9:12, "That's the thing about this team. If someone has an off game, anyone else can pick it up. Everyone can score, everyone can rebound."
And in fact, everyone on YVCC's roster did score and rebound with the exception of starting point guard Andrea Blodgett, who sat out with a sore foot.
Chelsie Morrison and Tana Stickney were the top point-makers with 17 and 14, respectively. Shaunte Nance-Johnson grabbed seven rebounds and Stickney had six.
"We were already playing at a pretty high level when Misty and Bryna went in, but we weren't making shots," Butler said. "We started making shots after they got in, and everybody started playing at an even higher level."
The explosive Warren, who hit her first five 3-pointers, dazzled the crowd with an assortment of stutter steps and crossovers, and also dished five assists.
But no other Timberwolf scored in double figures.
