Morrison leads YVCC women past CBC
YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

WENATCHEE — Yakima Valley may have shot poorly against Columbia Basin on Saturday, and the Yaks may have committed 28 turnovers, but they did one crucial thing well.

YVCC made 18 of 24 free throws with Chelsie Morrison hitting 5 of 6 in the final two minutes, and hung on to beat the Hawks 56-53 in the semifinals of the Wenatchee Tip-Off Tournament.

The Yaks, 2-0, will meet the winner of Saturday night's Wenatchee Valley-Spokane game at 4 p.m. today for the championship.

"They hit a bunch of threes to keep it close," YVCC coach Cody Butler said, "but we made our free throws. That was the difference."

Morrison finished with game-high totals of 19 points and eight rebounds. Andrea Blodgett, a freshman point guard from White Swan, added 11 points.

Ahead 30-24 at halftime, Yakima Valley went scoreless for the first five minutes of the second half and, at the 6:00 mark, trailed 40-37.

But Blodgett and Morrison hit back-to-back 3-pointers for a 43-40 YVCC lead.

CBC's Rondelle Guthrie, a freshman from Zillah, connected on several 3-pointers to keep the Hawks close. Guthrie finished with a team-high 17 points.

While Yakima Valley featured Blodgett and East Valley's Tana Stickney (Bryna Trescott, from Eisenhower, was injured), Columbia Basin listed Andrea Edwards and Karli Thomas from West Valley, Alexandria Allen from White Swan and Brittany Chandler from Ellensburg.
