Bryan Manaway scored
20 points to lead four Yakima Valley players in double figures Saturday as the Yaks men won their home-opener 77-73 over South Puget Sound in Sherar Gym.
John Scott Williams added 16 points on 5-for-9 shooting, WaLynn Burgess had 12 points and 12 rebounds and Jarett Brown finished with 10 points as YVCC improved to 5-2.
The Yaks led 52-33 at halftime, but found themselves in a donnybrook down the stretch. Ahead 74-73 in the final minute with the shot clock running down, Yakima Valley got a 3-pointer from Anthony Johnson — his only points of the game — to seal it.
"We had a great first half," YVCC coach Ray Funk said. "They were in a 2-3 zone and we shot the ball well from the perimeter. In the second half they switched to a man-to-man and, for whatever reason, we struggled. We were very tentative and didn't really get into an attack mode."
Derek Palm had 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Clippers.
Yakima Valley will continue its non-league schedule Friday in Salem, Ore., against Chemeketa. Its next home game is scheduled for Dec. 21 against Edmonds.
