Business Technology

The object of the Business Technology Program is to prepare students to enter various office positions.


The YVC Business Technology Program (BT) prepares students to enter various office positions that meet the local business community standards.  Course offerings are constantly updated to meet student and industry needs.  Many BT students attend classes in the morning and work in the afternoon.  BT students take classes in Business Technology, Information Technology, and Business Administration.  Depending on the major or certificate, students may also take classes in Accounting, Medical Assisting, Medical Billing and Coding, and Spanish.

To meet the Business Technology (BT) Program objective of preparing students to enter various office positions, students may choose from a variety of Associate of Applied Science degrees:

  • BT Administrative Assistant

  • BT Bilingual Administrative Office Assistant

  • BT Legal Office Assistant

  • BT Bilingual Legal Office Assistant

  • BT Medical Office Assistant

  • BT Bilingual Medical Office Assistant

   While obtaining one of these degrees, students will learn the following skills:

  •  typingstudent in class working on assignment

  •  ten-key electronic math

  •  word processing

  •  filing

  •  office procedures

  •  spelling

  •  English grammar

 Teamwork, critical thinking, problem solving, and human relations are integrated into the curriculum.

Certificates are also available in the program that lead toward employment and can be a pathway to one of the BT Associate of Applied Science degrees.  Certificates can range from one to five quarters.  Current certificates available include:

  • BT Bilingual Office Assistant (70 credits)
  • BT General Office Assistant (65 credits)
  • BT Legal Receptionist (15 credits)
  • BT Medical Receptionist (15 credits)

The Business Technology Program provides opportunities for employment and advancement in business, industry, government, and service offices.  

Administrative Assistant: Students completing the administrative assistant degree and BT office certificate programs may be employed in a variety of business office settings.

Bilingual Medical Office, Legal Office, and Administrative Office: Students completing this degree will be able to work in a variety of bilingual office settings.

Legal Office Assistant: Students graduating as legal office assistants may work in law firms, real estate offices, or government offices as well as the court system.

Medical Office Assistant: Students specializing in the medical office assistant degree and medical transcription certificate may work in medical offices, clinics, and hospitals.
