An academic vagabond, Ken Zontek graduated from high school in Elko, Nevada (1983) and then made stops at Georgetown University and Wenatchee Valley College before receiving his B.A. in history from Montana State University (1988). He began his professional career as a high school teacher in New Mexico where he also earned his M.A. in history at New Mexico State University (1993). Most recently, he taught high school social studies in English and Spanish in Washington and completed his Ph.D. in history at the University of Idaho (2003). His interests include outdoor activities combined with environmental study and ethno history.
