• Be a U.S. citizen, national, or a permanent resident.
  (International students are not eligible.)
• Have a high school diploma or the recognized equivalent (GED).
• Be in a college program which is at least one year in length and leads to a degree or certificate.
• You are making satisfactory academic progress in your studies.
• You are not in default on a student loan received at any college attended.
• You do not owe a repayment of grant funds at any college attended.
• If you are male you have registered for selective service.

The formula used to process the FAFSA information was established by Congress to make sure that all financial aid applicants pay their fair share of education costs and receive their fair share of financial aid. The formula, called Federal Methodology, is used for all financial aid applicants. The results of the formula determine your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) which is how much you and your family are expected to pay toward your education. If your EFC is below a certain level, you may qualify for a Federal Pell Grant.

To determine your EFC, the formula considers your family's income and assets.

Another way to estimate your EFC and financial need is by using an interactive form from the Mapping Your Future Web site. Once you enter the required information, an estimate of the expected family contribution and your financial need is computed.
