Civil Engineering Technology

Those who enter the Civil Engineering Technology field today can look forward to a very rewarding career.  A career that offers personal fulfillment, enduring service to humanity, and financial success.

In the next two decades, as the world's population grows, environmental concerns mount, and the technological revolution expands, there will be an unprecedented demand for Civil Engineering Technicians.  They will be needed to plan, design, build and maintain the facilities essential to our civilization:  bridges, dams, highways, transit systems, airports, tunnels, irrigation systems, water distribution and wastewater treatment facilities as well as industrial and commercial buildings.

A Career that is High-Tech

The phrase "high-tech" has been tossed around in engineering circles for the past several years, bringing to mid images of super computers, lasers and robotics.  But what does "high-tech" have to do with Civil Engineering?  Plenty!  The Civil Engineering profession has been pioneers in testing, adapting, and putting to practical use advances in technology.

Today, Civil Engineering Technicians are applying computers, global positioning systems, satellite imaging, remote sensing, geographic information systems, new materials and other high-tech developments to every aspect of their work.

Programs

Students enrolled in the Civil Engineering Technology Program are trained in a broad base of engineering services such as structural, geotechnical, transportation, hydraulics, environmental, Civil Engineering materials, surveying sciences, and construction engineering leading to a Associates of Science degree in Civil Engineering Technology.

With all these areas of activity, the Civil Engineering Technician Program at Yakima Valley Community College offers a wide range of career opportunities to satisfy individual interests, aptitudes, and goals.

Academic Requirements

The Civil Engineering Technology Program at Yakima Valley Community College is NOT a calculus based program.  This will allow the perspective student to focus on the individual aspects of the program without the fear of success in advanced math classes.

Career Opportunities

Career opportunities in Civil Engineering Technology are excellent.  The Yakima Valley Community College program prepares you for entry level work at average yearly starting salaries ranging from $30,000 to $40,000.  The job placement rate for YVCC graduates has consistently been high.

A large number of these graduates have found employment here in the Yakima Valley and have added to the productive work force in Engineering related professions.
