Our Purpose

Upward Bound (UB) prepares high school students from disadvantaged backgrounds for college success. The program focuses on developing student’s learning skills and improving their awareness of educational opportunities.

Upward Bound works with eight target high schools (Grandview, Mabton, Granger, Yakima Tribal, Toppenish, Wapato, and Davis) along with other Yakima Valley agencies and YVCC departments to provide services for participants.

Although some credits are earned for participation, it is not intended to be a credit retrieval program.

  Student Eligibility:
To participate in Upward Bound students must be either:

  • Low-income or
  • 1st generation college

Students must also have an academic need, which the project defines as meeting any one or more of the following criteria:

  • GPA less than 3.0
  • Performing below “B-” level in math, English, science, or history
  • Behind on scheduled credits for graduation with his/her class
  • Courses on transcript do not address college entrance requirements
  • Standardized test scores indicate student is below grade level in reading, writing, or math

Students who meet at least one of these criteria and show academic potential, but need assistance in realizing their abilities could benefit from Upward Bound.

  Activities:

During the academic year, students attend Upward Bound meetings one afternoon per week and one Saturday each month. Meeting topics may include learning skills, college, careers, teen issues, diversity, inter/intra-personal skills, decision making, college visits or guest speakers on various topics.

Each summer participants attend a seven week residential summer session at YVCC. Students take classes to build skills and participate in various educational, cultural and recreational events.

Please refer students whom you think could benefit from Upward Bound to one of the school counselors.
Thank you for your time and effort on behalf of your students.
